CHAPTER TEN

The whole of Idah was in uproar after Asoba delivered twin babies early in the morning. Only few people knew she was pregnant because she was a fat woman with a big stomach. Some people who saw her simply assumed there was nothing out place with the way she looked recently: she had simply increased in size, despite the fact that she already had twenty-six children.

When her birth pangs began, her husband tried to deliver her of the baby himself, but when it got complicated, he rushed to call a midwife. When she arrived, Asoba was already dying. That got the midwife annoyed and fought Asoba’s husband before attending to Asoba until she got better and delivered her child. She was well on her way home when she noted Asoba’s husband running behind her: Asoba was having another birth pang. The midwife came back, thinking it was part of Asoba’s antics to lure her husband back to her, but when she checked there was indeed another child. That was when she let out a scream that attracted the attention of the people.

By the time the midwife had helped deliver Asoba’s other child, the people had gathered in front of Asoba’s compound. It was an abomination to deliver twins in the land. When the midwife saw the resemblance of the two children, she began wailing. The women in the neighbourhood heard her wailing and knew what had happened. Many began to cry too. They knew then that they would never see Asoba anymore.

Soon enough Ohiogu the native doctor came visiting. The whole of Idah began to talk in hushed voices. The women and the children were afraid to come out; they would only peep through their doors and windows. It was an evil day with a bad omen.

When the Ajama eboh the chief priest came with the shrine messengers, Asoba’s children began crying. The chief priest had come to cleanse the compound and the entire Idah of the evil spirits that she had invited by delivering two children at once.

Ene cried all the while. Despite the fact that Asoba had always insulted her, she still loved her. They had grown up together. They had always fought, yes, but they would always make up soon after.

While she cried, Ujadu visited. When she saw her friend wailing she understood why, but she would not ask her. She waited awhile until her friend was tired.

“Asoba just couldn’t stop bearing,” Ene said between tears.

“Do you blame her? That is what Ojo Chamachala had blessed her bountifully with … children,” Ujadu replied, looking away from her friend because of her tears.

“Now her vagina would not let her live to enjoy the rewards of her labours.”

“Her older daughters would have been married by now and bring succor to the family, but they are all in their father’s compound because they ended up getting uglier than their mother…. When a man is too ugly, he accuses his parents of not marrying a wife for him.”

“Haa … indeed Asoba bore ugly children!” Ene exclaimed and hissed.
